Best File Types for DTF Artwork Uploads

PNG, JPG, PSD, PDF, SVG — which formats work for DTF gang sheets and which ones cause problems. A practical reference guide for operators and designers.

Short answer: Use PNG

PNG is the correct format for DTF artwork. It supports full alpha transparency, lossless compression, and is universally accepted by gang sheet builders and RIP software. Everything else is either a source format (PSD, SVG) or a problem format (JPG, GIF, WEBP).

File Format Breakdown

PNGBest
TransparencyLossless

The best format for DTF artwork. Supports full alpha transparency, lossless compression, and is universally compatible with gang sheet builders and RIP software.

Recommendation: Use for all final artwork files going onto gang sheets

PSD (Photoshop)Good
TransparencyLossless

Excellent for editing and archiving artwork. Supports layers, transparency, and high bit depth. Export to PNG before uploading to a gang sheet builder.

Recommendation: Use as your master working file — export to PNG for production

PDFAcceptable
TransparencyLossless

Acceptable for some workflows. PDFs can contain vector or raster artwork with transparency. Quality depends on how the PDF was created. Some gang sheet builders don't accept PDFs.

Recommendation: Use only if your builder accepts it and you've verified the transparency is intact

SVGAcceptable
TransparencyLossless

Good for vector artwork. Scales without quality loss. Most gang sheet builders don't accept SVG directly — export to PNG at 300 DPI at your target print size.

Recommendation: Use as a source format — export to PNG at 300 DPI for production

JPG / JPEGAvoid
TransparencyLossless

JPG does not support transparency. Any background removal done on a JPG is fake — the background is replaced with white, not removed. Lossy compression also degrades edge quality.

Recommendation: Never use for DTF artwork that needs a transparent background

GIFAvoid
TransparencyLossless

GIF supports only 256 colors and binary transparency (no soft edges). Completely unsuitable for DTF artwork. Gradients and soft edges will look terrible.

Recommendation: Never use for DTF artwork

WEBPAvoid
TransparencyLossless

WEBP supports transparency but is a web format, not a print format. Most RIP software and gang sheet builders don't accept WEBP. Convert to PNG before using.

Recommendation: Convert to PNG before uploading to any production tool

Why Transparency Is Non-Negotiable for DTF

DTF transfers are applied to garments of any color. If your artwork has a white background instead of true transparency, that white background prints as a white rectangle on the garment — visible on any non-white shirt.

JPG files cannot have transparent backgrounds. When someone “removes the background” from a JPG, they're replacing it with white — not creating true transparency. The only way to have true transparency is to use a format that supports alpha channels: PNG, PSD, PDF (with transparency), or SVG.
