DTF Prepress Checklist for New Operators
A complete step-by-step checklist for new DTF operators. Print this out and run through it on every job until the process becomes second nature.

Most DTF press errors are prepress errors — bad backgrounds, wrong resolution, incorrect export settings. New operators make these mistakes because they haven't built the habit of checking each step systematically.
This checklist covers every step from receiving artwork to handing off a print-ready file to RIP software. Run through it on every job until the process is automatic.
Before You Start
Confirm the sheet size with your supervisor or order spec
Check that your gang sheet software is set to the correct sheet dimensions
Confirm the minimum spacing requirement (usually 0.25" between designs)
Artwork Review
Open each file and verify it is a PNG with a transparent background (checkerboard pattern)
Check that no file is a JPG — JPGs cannot have transparent backgrounds
Zoom to 100% and check for white halos or background remnants around each design
Check that each design is at least 300 DPI at the size it will be printed
If any design is below 300 DPI at print size, flag it before placing it on the sheet
Building the Sheet
Use auto-nesting if available — manual placement typically wastes 15–20% more film
After nesting, verify no designs overlap or touch each other
Verify spacing between designs meets the minimum requirement
Verify all designs are within the sheet boundary (none cut off at edges)
Check that sheet margins are set correctly (at least 0.25" on all sides)
Pre-Export Check
Do a final visual review at 50% zoom — check the overall layout looks correct
Zoom to 100% on any design you're unsure about and inspect edges
Confirm all effects (halftone, outlines, metallic) have been applied
Confirm the sheet coverage is above 80% — if not, ask if more designs can be added
Export
Export as a single PNG file at 300 DPI
Name the file clearly: include date, sheet size, and order or job ID
Save the file to the designated production folder (not your desktop)
Confirm the exported file size is reasonable (200–600 MB for a full 22×120" sheet at 300 DPI)
Handoff to RIP Software
Drop the PNG into the RIP software and verify dimensions are correct (no scaling)
Check the RIP preview — the white underbase layer should be generating correctly
Confirm the print queue shows the correct sheet size and orientation
Flag any RIP warnings to your supervisor before printing
